PROPOSED CIVIC SCHEME
Dromana - Victoria - Australia
In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.
Dalai Lama
Encouraging kids & adults to be active has long known to have positive benefits both physically and emotionally. Providing a safe and stimulating cycling environment will help inspire users' personal and social development.
Together with RTSG Neuroscientists, Specialized launched a groundbreaking study that analyzed the effects riding had on school children dealing with ADHD symptoms. The results were, in short, awesome. Kids in the study showed improved attention, more “normal” neuroelectric brain activity post-ride, better overall mood, and reduced BMI and waist size. Many of these positive aspects were noticeable even after just one ride and the program demonstrated an 87% retention rate with kids.
“The findings also indicated there may be factors more unique to cycling that make it especially effective when it comes to the brain benefits of exercise. Factors like maintaining balance, being outdoors, riding in groups and the rhythmic motion of pedaling we theorize may have contributed to our findings being so profound”
-Dr. Lindsay Thornton, Lead researcher and Sports Psychologist

The community has worked together to create a design that provides recreational and local wellness provision for people of all ages and interests.
The project aims to create an amazing outdoor eco-adventure activity centre for the Mornington Peninsula. People of all ages and interests will be able to play, walk, run, climb and cycle to their heart's content. All these activities and more will be available for the public's enjoyment

PROPOSED MULTI-PURPOSE FITNESS EQUIPMENT

Multi-Fitness Park As A Catalyst For Adventure & Exploration of the Mornington Peninsula
As part of the World Class development potential at Arthur’s Seat a concept for a large scale ‘Multi-Fitness Park’ has been considered. The Mornington Peninsula relies heavily on activity tourism. Tree-surfing, winery tours, equestrian activities, golf, day spas and some of the most gorgeous beach fronts in Australia. Adding a destination activity such as a large scale cross fit park designed to accommodate the needs of mountain bikers, runners, parents & children, dog owners and walkers would help the region attract and retain visitors.
With Melbourne being less than an hour away on the new link it is an opportunity to offer visitors activities that will promote longer visits and therefore increased expenditure in the local community.
Mountain bike parks in Canada, the USA and the United Kingdom has contributed up to $100 million per annum in spin off spending with accommodation, hospitality and other activity based businesses. Parks in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would attest to the beneficial cultural change.
Using the mountain bike part as the core of the proposed multi-fit park will give it a clear focus and marketability. Linking into the existing Arthur’s Seat trail network and the adopted roadside verge trail network will amplify the Mornington Peninsula’s potential to appeal to a broad range of user groups.
The Red Hill Riders have visited and studied many examples around the world of other mountain bike parks to see what elements can be injected into the Arthur’s Seat concept. This is an incredibly exciting concept as it involves combining the needs and wants of a broad range of recreational users.
The two large paddock areas adjoining Boundary Road have been identified as a natural location for this proposed multi-activity park. The area has been earmarked for ‘recreational use’ in the Shire’s master plan.
Having a clear strategy to develop the paddock area inline with the overall vision of a mountain bike park will provide the Peninsula with a tremendous amenity asset and a legacy for the local community.

MOUNTAIN BIKING ON THE PENINSULA
Mountain biking has increased in popularity over the past 20 years to become one of the leading recreational activities. Crossing a wide range of social demographics, mountain biking is a unifying pastime that promotes healthy living, a connection with nature and community focus.
Starting off as a few riders venturing off the beaten track, the sport has now spread as a global pastime for a huge amount of people. It is a open and inclusive sport which provides a sustainable and enjoyable way to meet like minded people and keep fit.
Due to the increase in interest, mountain bike trails have gradually evolved on Arthur’s Seat, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. This informal network of trails has the potential to be a ‘World Class’ mountain bike park. Parks Victoria recognised the growing community desire for authorised trails and has worked in conjunction with the Red Hill Riders to engage in a process of public consultation and management.
Trails have been mapped and assessed for sustainability. A long term strategy has been put in place to ensure that positive development of the park can take place to maintain both the existing flora and fauna as well as the growing needs of the cycling community.
By engaging in this proactive management policy Parks Victoria have secured the cooperation, and visionary ownership by the mountain biking community in a model example of community engagement by a State authority.
All those involved wish to see the precious parkland preserved as well as developed for healthy living.
